Viking Glass - 6 Petal Pattern Introduced in 1962

by Preston Ver Meer

The 1962 Viking Catalog Cover was the first signs of the ever visible Epic 6 Petal pattern. The #1435 Vase, sizes 15" to 18" with 3" base and the #1436 Flared Vases were pictured on page 2 of the 1962 Catalog. Page 4, of the same catalog, shows the taller #1432 with its 4" base and 22" height. Also shown was the #1433 Flared Vase standing 9.5" tall. The 10" Crimped Compote #1431 and the 7" Crimped Compote #1434 were introduced on page 5. Still coming on page 6 was the first view of the 10" Covered Candy Jar #1437 with 4" base. Page 7 introduced the 8" 3-Part divided Covered Candy Dish #1438 (see the first link below). The Vases had bases of 4" on the taller ones, 3" on the 15 - 18" ones and 2.5" on the shorter 12" ones. In 1963 Viking Catalog supplement the 10" Bud vase #1465 was introduced and it has a 2 3/8" base.

Viking had 2 sizes in this Vase with the 2.5" base going to the taller 12 to 13" vases. This same Catalog Supplement showed more new 6 Petal items. The 10" Candy Jar #1437 and 8" Covered Candy Jar #1428 with a 3" base and the 5" Covered Mint Jar #1429 with a 2 3/8" base was shown. This little Mint Jar stands 5.5" tall and has a 3" mouth. The 5" Compote #1464 was also shown. Both of these items are tough to come by these days. I still haven’t seen the Ruby 10" Covered Candy Jar or Mint Jar.
The little Mint Jar Mold was used to produce a small pair of Candle Holders 5.25" across, #1422, the same small base. Also pictured is the small 5" Flared Vase #1466 with the same 2 3/8" base.

The 1964 Catalog carried all the previous items and introduced the #1431 10" Compote. The colors listed under Epic 6 Petal at that time were Avocado, Bluenique, Honey, Persimmon, Evergreen and Ruby. BUT! The 1964 Viking Catalog also listed the "Georgian" pattern made in Crystal, Amethyst, Colonial Blue and Emerald, so I think any color is possible.

By the time the 1966-1967 Catalog was printed the 10" Covered Candy Jar #1437 and the 5" Covered Mint Jar #1429 were no longer listed.

The 1968-1969 Viking Catalog changed the number on the 8" 6 Petal Covered Candy Jar from #1428 to #6812. I haven't a clue why. This Catalog introduced the #6815 a large 10" Flared Bowl with 6 Petal foot.
The 1968-69 price list showed the 10" Bud Vase #1465, the Covered Candy Jar #6812, the 10" and 7" Compote all made in Thistle color pictured above in both sizes of the Compote. The 1970 Catalog only listed 7 items in the 6 Petal pattern. The #6812 was now shown made in Ruby. 1970 introduced the color "Lime" known to most of us as Vaseline. Pieces shown made in Lime were, #1422 small Candle Sticks, 10" compote (picture) #1431, 7" compote #1434, 10" bud Vase #1465.

The 1971 Viking Catalog shows a page of Bluenique 6 Petal items. All 3 Vases #1432, #1435, and 1465 listing them made in colors Green, Bluenique, Amber and Orange. The large 10" Compote #1431 and 7" compote #1434 were both shown along with the large Flared 10" Footed Bowl #6815 and the #1436 Pulled Compote. The #1422 Candle Sticks were still shown. Along with the 8" Covered Candy Jar #6812 they were all made in the same colors.

This same page was run in the 1972 Catalog with all items above show.

The 1973 Viking Catalog was down to items #1431 - 10" Bowl, #1432 Tall Vase, 1434 - 7" Compote #1435, #1436, #1465 vases and the 6812 Covered Candy. All items made in the same 4 colors as earlier.

Black Example is very Scarce! 1978-1979 ONLY!

These vases were in the line a long time. Brought back year after year in different colors. They seem plentiful today in Persimmon, Amber and Avocado but harder to find in other colors.

This Black example was only shown in the 1978-1979 Viking Catalog with both #1432 and shorter bud vase #1465. This is the first one I have seen, in black, in 25 years of collecting Viking.

The 1974 Viking Catalog #1432 Tall Vase and the #1435 printed in Brown color that was introduced in 1970. The Catalog also showed the #1465 and #1436 vases. The #6812 Covered Candy Jar was shown in Ruby. The #1431, #1434 and #1436 Compotes were still shown in the standard colors.

The 1975-1976 Viking Catalog only carried the items and it continued into 1976-1977 Catalog.

1977-1978 Viking Catalog pictured the #6812 Covered Candy jar inside the front cover in the beautiful bluenique color. It was in the November 1, 1977 price list that Viking introduced Crystal and Crystal Satin Glass. 6 Petal was not shown in Satin Glass in the 1977 Catalog.

I will continue the 6 Petal pattern history in another article starting with the Satin Glass in the late 70's.
