"Viking Glass Diamond Point Covered Candy Introducted in 1968!"
by Preston Ver Meer

The very first photo of the #6816 Diamond Point Candy and Cover was shown, in Persimmon, in the 1968 - 1969 Viking Catalog.

This "Thistle" Candy & Cover was made in this color, only one year!

There were only 25 items in the Viking line that were made in this "Thistle" color in 1968 - 1969. These are very scarce and highly sought pieces of Art Glass!

This is a heavy and very neat piece of middle 60's Viking Art Glass. This Covered Candy is 7.5 Inches Wide by 6 Inches tall - Weighs in at 3 lbs. 12 ozs. This Covered Candy is built solid and stayed in the line until 1980. The 1968 Viking Price List show it made in Thistle, Avocado, Amber, Persimmon and Bluenique.

The 1970 Catalog showed the "Scarce" Vaseline colored Diamond Point Covered Candy on page 4.

There were 38 items shown made in Vaseline in the 1970 Price List. Just about all these items are hard to come by to say the least and many are down right scarce and rarely seen. After 10 years of collecting I just added the Vaseline Covered Candy to my collection this week.

This Covered Candy sold for $7.00 in 1968 and cost me $50 today. That's a 7% return on investment for the person who originally bought this Vaseline Covered Candy to enhance the beauty of their home. If they only knew it was going up in value as it was adding joy to their life.

It is the first one I have seen. It obviously made my day when I opened the box and set it, the Covered Candy Dish, under the Black light. It lights up the room at night! I guess that's what collecting is all about those small moments of joy!

The 1971 Viking Catalog shows the beautiful Bluenique Diamond Point Covered Candy on Page 10. This is another prize in this collection.

The Bluenique color made by Viking is a startling color all by itself but this Covered Candy displays well in all decor. This Covered Candy was shown in Bluenique, in the Catalog, along side the Diamond Point Ashtray and Stemmed Lighter. This is a very neat display of Bluenique Viking Glass. No Thistle or Vaseline is shown in the price List and Bluenique, Avocado, Persimmon and Amber were listed selling for $7.00 each.

The 1972 Viking Catalog showed the same Bluenique Page it used for the 1971 Catalog. No new colors were added.

The 1973 Viking Catalog showed the #6816 Diamond Covered Candy on page 5 in Persimmon.

The Price List and Catalog introduced the colors Brown and Plum but did not show the Diamond Candy Dish made in these colors. If they are out there, in these colors, they would have to be called RARE! The other 4 colors were now selling for $7.50.

The 1974 Viking Catalog showed the Bluenique Diamond Point Candy on page 5. It was in this Catalog on page 8 where they showed the other 2 Diamond Point Ashtrays. The 6 inch #7324 and the 4 incher #7343 were shown in Amber and Avocado. They were making these Ashtrays and Lighters in Ruby but not the Diamond Point Covered Candy.

FINALLY! The Ruby Diamond Point Covered Candy Shows Up In 1975!

The 1975 - 1976 Viking Catalog finally showed a photo of the Ruby Diamond Point Covered Candy on page 15 with a large assortment of Ruby items. The Price list showed the other 4 colors priced at $9.00 each now and the Ruby one was selling for $12.50. For the first 6 or 7 years the Diamond Point Covered Candy was not made in Ruby. I don't know how that affects it's value but I know Ruby cost more to make so I am assuming there were less sold in this color. I have it priced higher in value in the Gallery.

The 1976 - 1977 Viking Catalogs showed the Avocado Diamond Point Candy on page 6 and the beautiful Ruby one on page 8. The Stemmed Lighters were gone but the other Lighters and Ashtrays were still shown.

I have another article written on the Diamond Point Lighters on the website!

In 1977 all the Diamond Point Covered Candies were selling for $12.50 and the Ruby one was going for $15.00.

The 1977 - 1978 Catalog shows a large close up photo of the Amber Covered Diamond Point Candy on page 4.

This Amber Diamond Close up photo is a pretty impressive looking Photo but, not as impressive as the large close up photo on page 7 of the Ruby one. They are selling for the same price set back in early 1977.

The 1978 - 1979 Catalog brought the Persimmon colored Diamond Point Covered Candy out in a large close up shot on page 4. So these Covered Candies were now in the line for 10 years. This makes the 4 basic colors fairly easy to locate on the web but the others will give you some hassle trying to locate. The Ruby Covered Candy was show on page 8. The 1979 Price list had the regular colors selling for $15.95 each and the Ruby one was now bringing $18.50.

The 1980 thru 1982 Catalogs were only carrying the Ruby Diamond Point Covered Candy as they were selling down the inventory and the price was now $20.95 each. The Diamond Point Covered Candy was not shown after the 1980 - 1981 Viking Catalog!
